Top Ten Tuesday: Unpopular Bookish Opinions

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is:

Unpopular Bookish Opinions

Here are some opinions that might not be so popular with some of you.

1. I like abs on covers.

A lot of people aren’t fans of shirtless men gracing the covers of books. I’m not for them because I want to stare at them while I read. To be honest, I don’t look at covers all that much while reading because I do it on my Kindle. Why I don’t mind them is when I’m looking for a sports romance, I expect them. They kind of steer me in the right direction.

2. I like people and couples on covers.

I think they’re cute.

3. Cartoon-ish Covers Are Being Used Too Much Lately

I know the fad right now in romance is to have cute, cartoon covers. I like them, but I’m starting to feel like they’re getting to be too prevalent. There are books that don’t warrant a cutesy cover getting one. I also don’t like that authors are switching already cool existing covers to cartoon covers now.

4. I’m tired of seeing so many tweets about needing more new adult books.

I don’t want to start anything with this, but there are a TON of new adult books out there. They have been around for years. People are still writing them. They haven’t gone away. Yes, they’re mainly ROMANCE novels. New adult rose as a romance sub-genre. I get that it’s used for genres other than romance, but saying in a tweet that it needs to come back is inaccurate. The sub-genre never left. Maybe there weren’t as many books traditionally published from other genres in recent years, but it didn’t die. Plus, it has always been more popular in indie publishing. Maybe that’s a factor. I don’t know. It just always makes me roll my eyes when I see those tweets.

5. Book Hoarding

You don’t need to own every book out there. I have 6 shelves of books at my house. If my 6 shelves run over, I get rid of books. I sell them or pass them on to others. I don’t get more bookshelves. I only hold on to books that are signed, I’ve loved dearly, or am saving for my daughter to read in a couple of years. Yes, books are pretty and can feel like a status symbol at times. If you’re not going to re-read them or they’re just taking up space, why not share them with someone else?

6. I Don’t Like to Buy Used Books / Physical Library Books

I’m going to blame my dead grandmother for this one. She had a thing against used books. Grandma Faye was born in 1910, and I think they worried about the germs from used books a lot when she was alive. I just don’t like the smell of them. They kind of gross me out. I will read newer library books, though.

Okay, I can’t think of anything else.

  1. I agree with you on so many of these, except I’m not a fan of abs on covers and I own way too many books. In my defense, though, I’ve been to a lot of signings so almost all are signed. There’s one series that my husband and I both read and love, so we always buy the hardbacks and take turns reading and re-reading.

  2. Lol, I agree with you on the book hoarding! I only keep/collect my favorite author’s books and have a couple shelves of unread books. I usually go through them and get rid of books twice a year. And I’m terrible about using my library and rarely shop at used bookstores anymore. I just don’t have the time to read everything, and what I do have time to read – it’s on my Kindle! I will say that I am not a fan of beefed up dudes on covers. LOL.

    • It’s kind of cathartic to pass on books you aren’t going to read again.

I knew people were going to disagree with the beefed up covers. I just usually know what I’m getting with those books.

  3. I’m with you on most of these. The whole second hand book thing in particular but I put this down to being a bit of a germophobe. I do get books from the library but when the book I’ve reserved turns out to be a manky paperback it does make me shudder and douse myself in hand sanitiser.

Am less keen on people on covers, I much prefer cutesy cartoon covers but I know what you mean about knowing what you’re getting if there’s a set of abs and maybe a hockey stick on the cover.

  4. I have an issue with physical library books sometimes, especially if they’re in really nasty shape. I’ll admit I’ve wondered about germs a few times. I mean some of them are in ROUGH shape lol. And the cartoonish covers- some of them I don’t mind, but lately yeah I can see the trend getting out of hand.

  5. I own way too many books but I do unhaul. I’m too cheap to buy 10 copies of one book though. I will sometimes buy a special edition of a book, but it’s for decoration honestly and I love if they have a bunch of pages of fanart.

  6. I’m not a fan of used books either, so you’re not alone πŸ™‚ and thank you for mentioning book hoarding, I’m running out of space at the moment and really should do some spring cleaning ahah πŸ™‚
    Lovely list!

  7. I love this topic! I meant to do it, but it fell off my radar. Maybe I’ll do it a week later, instead. I totally agree with you about not liking used books. Even though I work at a library now, I haven’t actually gotten a physical item from a library since college. I use it for ebooks. I’m a bit of a germaphobe anyways and I always have to wash/sanitize my hands after touching paper anyone else has touched because there is nothing you can do to clean paper and it creeps me out! Also, I don’t see a whole lot of NA comments on Twitter, but I could probably make a whole list of things that bother me about twitter haha.

  8. I love used bookstores/the library, so I’m the opposite side of that, but I get why some people don’t like it. I also like abs on the covers. I’ve been reading on my Kindle a lot more too, and yes, the abs are on like 98% of NA sports romances, so it’s easy to know right away lol

  9. “I just don’t like the smell of them. They kind of gross me out.” I can definitely relate to that feeling! I’m 10/10 the same lol. I don’t want to feel like that and I do very much adore the concept and atmosphere of libraries and used books stores and I think they are awesome — but reading them myself? It’s sadly a no from me. I just can’t touch them without thinking about all the other people that had them, touched them, put them somewhere etc. I have also made really bad experiences with library books and all of that just adds up.
100% appreciated and 100% not for me haha.
