Top Ten Tuesday: My Resolutions/Goals for 2018

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is Bookish Resolutions/Goals. So here we go!

1. Read less.

Read less is probably a shocking goal on a list like this, but I honestly need to do it. I read way too much last year. Reading is amazing for all sorts of reading, but I think I need to spend a little less time reading and more time living.

2. Request less ARCs.

I need to get pickier. In the past few years, I’ve gone a little NetGalley crazy. We’re all guilty of it at some point. I usually like the books I request from there, but they started taking over my reading. I need to get back to reading some of the books I already own. I’ll still be requesting ARCs, but only for tours I really want to do

3. Read more variety.

If you read my blog, then you know I mainly focus on romance. I need to slip in some other genres more often. Branch out and all.

4. Focus on reading and not reviewing.

The pressure to have a review for every book and every day is overwhelming. When I started blogging, I was going to do 2 to 3 reviews a week. This snowballed and I ended up doing a review almost 5 days a week. That’s insane. I felt like I was flying through books and not giving my best to my reviews. I already started this fall, but I’m sticking with around 3 reviews a week.

5. Review content.

I need to up my game on my review content. I feel like a lot of my reviews are starting to sound similar.

6. Blog commenting.

I follow so many blogs now that commenting has become harder. I want to focus on reading other bloggers reviews and really commenting on the content of them. It may mean I comment less in general, but I want it to count.

7. Participating in memes.

I’ve really shied away from book tags in the past year. I am not sure if I’ve just done most of them, or I haven’t wanted to take the time to explore more of them. I’ve mostly just been focusing on the Top Ten Tuesday and WWW Wednesday memes. I think I’ll keep doing that this year, but not put the pressure on myself to have a post for each Tuesday or Wednesday if I’m too busy with life.

8. Read more with my daughter.

My daughter and I used to read together nightly. Now that she’s a big 4th grader, she can read on her own. We haven’t been spending that quality time with me reading out loud to her. I want to get that special time back, so this month I started reading out loud to her again before bed when it’s possible. We started with A Wrinkle in Time. I loved that book as a kid and want to see the movie.

9. Be more active on Goodreads.

I used to spend a lot of time in a particular Goodreads group. I miss participating in their posts and buddy reads. I’m hoping resolutions 2, 3 and 4 help with this one.

10. Book + Main Bites.

I signed up for this site/app when it began. I still don’t get it. I rarely go on it, and I feel like I should be checking it out more to support authors. I need to figure it out this year!

Do any of these goals sound familiar to you? Are you aiming to do the same? What are your goals?

  1. I love all of these! I want to focus on reading what I want and trying more genres outside my comfort zone. Less is a good thing – I would rather read quality books than focus on a number. I’m especially intimidated by long books and this year I want to get over that fear! Reading with your daughter is so great…I need to do that more, too.

  2. I really love all of these goals and LIVING life a bit more. I am probably going to be reading a bit less than I normally do, mostly because I want to focus more on blogging and finishing up some projects I didn’t get finished last year for my site. But still want to read at least 3-5 books a week if not more. When I normally read 6-8 a week. But sometimes when I am in a reading mood, I can’t put books down hehe

  3. I started to get really picky with requesting ARCS. I remember in 2016 I went a little crazy with it and always ended up with so many ARCs I had to catch up on and it was not fun. It made wanting to read them more of a chore. I started to become really picky and usually only requesting one or two per month of release day, so I didn’t have a ton of them releasing at the exact same time/month.

I started to review less over the last year and a half. I saved my reviews for ARCs or super new releases. I felt bad at first, but then I noticed that I loved reading a lot more again when I didn’t feel like I had to finish books to get reviews out there. Now I review if I really love a book or feel like I need to share it with everyone. Or for ARCs.

Great list of goals! Good luck with them. πŸ™‚

  4. *whisper* How much did you read last year? I know it was a very unproductive year for me, but now I am curious what made you decide on that goal haha
Also, what are some genres you would be interested in when branching out? Do you already have something in mind?

    1. LOL. I read over 250 books. Maybe closer to 300. Now, that does include short novellas, but still…
I would like to read more thrillers and general fiction. More memoirs. Last year was a big romance year for me.

      1. NOVELLAS STILL COUNT! And holey moley, that is a lot of books! I do get why you would want to pace yourself a little, but good on you for making it to that number still. That’s really awesome!
I know nothing about thrillers, but if I find some good general fiction, I’ll let you know for sure. My favorite book from last year was Call Me By Your Name … still romance I suppose, but also general fiction? It’s from 2007 though, so I don’t know if you’ve maybe already read it or just aren’t interested in it.

  5. Seeing read less was a shocker haha! I do know you are AMAZING at reading EVERYTHING so I totally understand. I’m always in awe at the amount you read. Reading with your daughter sounds perfect. She will have those memories forever. Definitely think that’s a great goal to have <3 Love your list!! Good luck with all of these girlie <3

    1. LOL. Yeah, I read too much. Mostly because I don’t really watch TV and I spend a lot of time hanging out in my car at soccer practice. That’s like 3 hours a week of reading alone.

  6. These are some really great goals. Out of curiosity, how much did you read last year? I’ve been in such a slump, I really can’t see myself reading more than 30 books this year.

    1. Thank you! Um…more than 250. I can read a book in a day or two. I think that’s because romances are so quick. What’s put you in a slump?

      1. Damn, that is definitely an impressive amount! I have no idea how you managed to fit in all those books.
I think it’s a combination of life stresses and not knowing what book I’m in the mood to read. It’ll sort itself out soon, hopefully.

  7. I love all these goals! I am always impressed by how many books you manage to review. I think 2-3 a week is still an amazing amount! A couple years ago I decided to only to Top Ten Tuesday etc. when the topic really, really interested me (or if my blog schedule for that week was basically empty) and it took so much stress away from me. I’ve never heard of that site/app you mentioned. Has it been around awhile?

  8. Such great goals! Reading less actually makes a lot of sense as well as the focus on the reading and not the reviewing/deadlines/ARCs. Definitely a good way to properly fall in love with reading again! Good luck with your goals in 2018. πŸ™‚

  9. Great goals! I think reading less helps so much! The past few years I pushed myself to read so much that last year I just needed to chill out and take it slow. Same with blogging. I think that it has really helped to take a step back because now I feel a lot more balanced and more energized when I think about everything like reading and blogging. Good luck with all of your goals this year! πŸ™‚

  10. Great goal. I think I need to borrow your goal on less ARCs. I haven’t started the year well in that aspect since I have 12 pending titles but I hope to slow down and read my own titles more often. Have a fab year ahead and enjoy your reading and blogging.

  11. I love these!! I am in the same boat with my daughter as well. Mainly cause i have 4 children ( oldest doesn’t want me to read to him haha ) but i have to read at least 3 different books most the time and it tires this mama out.
