Top Ten Tuesday: The DNF’d

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s is Books I Decided to DNF (did not finish) Too Quickly. I have a hard time with this topic because I rarely DNF. I always try to push myself to finish books. So, I’m changing my topic to The DNF’d, which is really just books I started but didn’t finish.

1. The Elite

I got to page 43 and then gave up. I couldn’t stand America.

2. Burn for Me

I actually started listening to this book for my book group. I couldn’t stand the narration. I have up at 25% when I found out I wouldn’t be able to make book group that month.

3. Mosquitoland

I really wanted to read this one, but it started out so boring. I made it onto the bus with the MC, but then had to return it to the library.

4. The Now or Never Moment: Omnibus

This one was not my thing. The writing didn’t flow well in my opinion and the story was weird.

5. Falling for the Player

This one was a M/M “sports” romance. There wasn’t any sports and I couldn’t tell the perspectives apart. Also, didn’t like the story.

6. City of Lost Souls

I loved the first three books. I made it through the fourth, but I couldn’t finish the fifth.

7. Brilliant: The Evolution of Artificial Light

I didn’t make it past the first chapter. This was another book group book from a long time ago that was worse than reading a text book.

8. The Hangman’s Daughter

I don’t know why I didn’t finish this one. It’s been so long. I must have gotten bored.

9. Outlander

I don’t really count this on as a DNF because I do want to read it someday. I tried to start it, but got side tracked and have been too overwhelmed by the sheer size of it to go back.

  1. While I did like the first three books of the Selection series (last two books sucked), I also couldn’t stand America. Mosquitoland was so bad, ughh. I wanted to like it too, but it was not good. Same for the Mortal Instruments. I really loved the first four books, but the last couple were just so boring and so bad. The series could have seriously just ended after book three and it would have been a perfect series. It just went on and on, omg. I couldn’t take it anymore but I somehow pushed through the final book. Though it took me MONTHS.

  2. Ugh The Elite was AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL! I wish I would’ve DNF-ed it, as well. I did finish the original trilogy, though. I gave up after that. The Mortal Instruments should have stopped after 3 books…but I read all those, too. I didn’t use to be able to DNF, apparently. I’m glad I’m over that now haha.

    • I think I’m pretty alone on my feelings for it. I do really think it was the narrator, though.

  3. Honestly, I haven’t heard of some of these books but the ones on here that I do recognize, I can totally see why you didn’t finish them. I feel like The Selection is a hit or miss and that people either love or hate them and there’s rarely an in between. Plus, the characters in the original trilogy and the ones about America’s daughter can be a bit much. As for The Mortal Instruments, the first three books were the superior additions to the series so I don’t blame you for stopping during the others. And Outlander is SUCH a good series but a very time consuming series–I started it almost three years ago and am only a quarter of the way through book three.

    Great list!

    • Thank you! Maybe when I have nothing to read, I can sit down with Outlander. I’m afraid it would take me too long between books and I would forget everything!

  4. Totally understand not finishing The Mortal Instruments. The 4th and 5th ones were train wrecks if I remember well. Just seeing the synopsis of The Selection and I knew I couldn’t make it through those books, haha.

  5. I took mosquitoland and burn for me off my TBR. I’m not excited to read them and trust your judgment. I want to attempt Outlander and TMI series one day…just not any time soon lol

  6. Ugh, The Elite really disappointed me too. I should have put it on my list too for the EXACT SAME REASON.

    Here’s my TTT 🙂
