Series Review: The Bennetts by Kennedy Ryan

When I read my first KENNEDY RYAN book, I knew I was going to go back and read all of her other books. I was finally about to read her THE BENNETTS series. Rather than review them all separately, I am reviewing them all in this post.

When You Are Mine (Book1) and Loving You Always (Book 2)
Publication Dates: January 1, 2014
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ½

(I’m reviewing the first two books together because they’re basically one story.)

Synopsis #1:

Forever is a heartbeat away . . .

Kerris Moreton knows how to make things work. Bounced from foster home to foster home as a kid, she adapted; when opportunity arose, she thrived. Now, about to open her own business and accept a marriage proposal, Kerris is ready to build the life she’s always wanted. The only thing missing? A passionate connection with her would-be fiancé, Cam. Kerris wants to believe that sparks are overrated-until Walsh Bennett lights her up like the Fourth of July.

. . . but what about love?

As one of the East Coast’s most eligible bachelors, Walsh enjoys financial independence, fulfilling work with his family’s nonprofit, and plenty of female attention. But lately he’s been distracted by the one woman he can’t have. Lovely to look at and even sweeter to know, Kerris is the soul mate Walsh never thought he would find. The problem is, his best friend found her first . . .

Synopsis #2:

Kerris Moreton should be the happiest woman in the world: She has a successful business and is about to start the family she’s always wanted. But the man of her dreams-the one whose green eyes see straight into her soul and whose gentle hands make her body hum with pleasure-is not hers.

Each secret moment with Walsh Bennett serves to remind Kerris of what she’s missing. And every stolen hour makes it harder to see her future without him. But being with Walsh would betray a sacred promise and upend her perfect life. When tragedy strikes, the razor’s edge between love and loyalty grows sharper than ever. And Kerris must decide where her heart will fall . . .

REVIEW:

I’m not a big fan of love triangles (especially involving friends/family), so these two books aren’t my favorite Kennedy Ryan has written. I wanted Walsh and Kerris to end up together, but I felt really horrible for Cam. Even when he was being a not so good person, I felt like Cam was betrayed in terrible way. I liked how everything worked out in the end, but I still felt bad for Cam.

One thing I want to mention is that these books are written in third person unlike Ryan’s newer books. That wasn’t my favorite, but I was impressed that she was still able to put the same amount of emotions into her characters and their problems that way. Once I got used to the third person, I barely noticed it.

Overall, When You Are Mine and Loving You Always were good books. The love triangle was done is a way that didn’t leave me stressing out about who Kerris would end up with. Her path always felt right. I adored her, Walsh, and even Cam. I was happy to find out the next book is Cam and Jo’s.

Be Mine Forever (Book 3)
Publication Date: February 3, 2015
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★

Synopsis:

Can a secret crush . . .

Jo Walsh has loved Cameron Mitchell for as long as she can remember. Whether front and center in her life or on the periphery, the tall, brooding artist has made his presence seductively and irresistibly known. But whenever they start to get close, Cam pulls away. Jo’s tired of keeping her feelings in a box Cam is afraid to open. If he wants her, he’ll have to prove it. And if he doesn’t, Jo will need to know the real reason why . . .

. . . become the love of a lifetime?

How do you walk away from your soul mate? Cam wishes he knew. No matter how far he runs from Jo, he can’t resist looking back at the silver eyes that seem to see right through him. But as well as Jo thinks she understands Cam, the dark truth about his past is something she shouldn’t have to handle. Cam’s sure that setting Jo free is the right thing to do. Too bad his heart has other ideas . . .

REVIEW:

I’m still not a fan of the third person, but Be Mine Forever is classic Kennedy Ryan. It’s deep, dark, gritty, and emotional. It’s also sweet. Despite being kind of a jerk, Cam has a heart of gold. He doesn’t want to drag anyone into his problems, especially someone as special to him as Jo. I loved how he let his guard down with her eventually. Cam had some tough things to overcome and I loved that Jo was such a great support. Jo was such a kind hearted person as well as a strong, determined woman. I loved Cam and Jo together. I loved this book.

Until I’m Yours (Book 4)
Publication Date: February 2, 2016
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ½

Synopsis:

The world knows her face . . .

Mean girl. Goddess. Bitch. Supermodel Sofie Baston has earned those labels . . . yet they don’t scratch the surface of who she really is. Before she can follow her own dreams, Sophie must do her daughterly duty and reel in a “fish” for her father’s business-a tall, brown-eyed entrepreneur who immediately hooks her. He’s a big guy with an even bigger heart . . . but will that heart be open to Sofie once her darkest secret is revealed?

. . . but only one man knows her heart

To Trevor Bishop, Sofie is a beautiful mystery he would gladly spend his life solving. He figures her tough demeanor is armor against a world that’s hurt her too many times. Then Sofie’s deepest wounds are reopened by the powerful, ruthless man who made them. When she musters the courage to take him down, her world shatters. Now Trevor is determined to help Sofie pick up the pieces so they can build a future together. The challenge will be convincing his ice princess that it’s safe to melt in his arms . . .

REVIEW:

This was my favorite book in the series! I’m really surprised because I was not a fan of Sofie from the first two books. She was really horrible, and I found it hard to think she could redeem herself. Getting to know the real Sofie made me fall in love with her. She was as mean as she seemed, but how she ended up being that way made a lot of sense. It also helped that Sofie also had a big heart. Sofie just needed to be loved. She found a special connection with Trevor. I loved him and how he supported her. I’m happy she got a sweet, but emotional story.

Another reason this was my favorite book was because it was in first person!!! The past three books were in third person. It was so much easier to connect with Sofie in this one because of the first person narration. Thank goodness Kennedy Ryan switched things up. I loved seeing how her writing evolved from the first book to the last.

Overall, I enjoyed reading The Bennetts. It was an emotionally charged series. That made it hard to binge read at times, but I’m happy I did. I loved seeing the evolution of the characters throughout the entire series. I also loved seeing Kennedy Ryan’s writing grow.

**One thing I do feel the need to point out is that this series may have some big TRIGGERS for some people. Three of the main characters in this series were raped in the past, so each book has something about that. (You might think that would make the books feel redundant, but it surprisingly didn’t.)

Review: Royal Rebel by Jessica Peterson

Royal Rebel
Series: Flings with Kings, #2
Author: Jessica Peterson
Publication Date: March 29, 2018
Publisher: Peterson Paperbacks
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Note: This review is for an ARC and is my unbiased opinion.

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★

Synopsis:

Royal. Recklessly Rebellious. Totally Delicious.

SUBJECT: I’m sorry (Marked Confidential)
Sat 21 May 02:48 A.M.

From the Desk of His Royal Highness Prince Robert

Aly—can’t stop thinking about tonight. Never thought enemies like us would end up naked together. Know you think Im cocky, but come on, sweetheart…don’t tell me it’s not the best sex you’ve ever had.

I’m not a good man. But for the first time, I wish I were. Maybe then I’d deserve you. I don’t. Not when I come from a family like mine. All these secrets…

You’re gorgeous. Clever. You call me out on my bullshit, and I bloody adore it.

I adore you, sweetheart.

You have your new bloke. And I’m…me. The playboy prince. We’re not meant to be together. But staying away from you is killing me, Aly. Thinking about him touching you is killing me.

I’ve no right to talk to you like this. Im sorry. It’s the whisky talking. This is what you do to me.

Rob

P.S.—am I stupid to think you might feel the same way?

P.P.S—I am not going to send this. So never mind.

I have to admit that I was hesitant to read Royal Rebel after reading Royal Ruin. I have been a fan of Jessica Peterson’s writing since the Study Abroad series began, but was Royal Ruin was the least favorite book of hers to date. I just didn’t connect with the main character. But when I saw the blurb for Royal Rebel, I had to read it. It sounded like fun.

Royal Rebel is about Aly trying to find her forever man. She wants the house, the kids, and the Volvo. Aly knows she won’t find those things with Prince Rob, her hot hook-up. She can’t even stand the man. Rob’s not quite ready to be done with their time together, though. He would do just about anything to keep their hook-up status going — maybe even accept that deep down he deserves someone like Aly.

Royal Rebel was definitely fun. I loved the witty dialog and banter. The emails between Rob and Aly were especially entertaining. I also enjoyed the unexpectedly sweet moments between the two. Rob and Aly had a great physical and emotional connection. Their journey toward happily ever after was very romantic. I’m so happy I got to experience their relationship! It’s made me excited to continue the rest of this series, and reminded me why I enjoy Jessica Peterson’s writing so much.

Excerpt

August was a slight step ahead of me. I followed close on his heels until we were outside. We paused, fingers intertwined. He faced me and ran his thumb over the back of my hand. It was a simple brush, but there was nothing simple about touching August.

We both glanced at our clasped hands. My breath faltered. The past few days had been warm for April, the heatwave steaming the evenings, too. Being with August made it steamier.

He wound both our arms around my back, pulling me against him. “You look beautiful, Possum.”

His nickname for me pinched my heart. As kids, I’d pretend to sleep sometimes while we’d watch TV, like a deceiving possum playing dead. I’d then bolt upright to scare the living shit out of him. A screeching August was supremely entertaining.

I tilted my head back to look into his eyes, every memory we’d shared reflected in those hazel pools. “I’ve missed that nickname.”

His free hand came to my cheek, knuckles brushing it gently. “I’ve missed you. It was always there, under my skin, in every song, but I didn’t realize how much until today. My heart is fucking racing.”

God, this man. I squeezed our laced palms and unfurled my other over his sternum. Over his heart. Need bellowed in that thundering beat. “You don’t smell like grass.”

He wrinkled his nose. “I used to smell like weed?”

“Like grass, dummy. Your lawn mowing business.”

He smiled and shook his head lightly. “We can roll around in a park, if you want.” He sucked on his bottom lip while eyeing mine.

Lord have mercy. “I can’t believe this is happening.”

“Oh, it’s happening.” He gripped my hand tighter, pulled me closer, brushed his nose against mine.

My best friend, the friend I loved irrevocably and thought I’d lost for good, might actually kiss me.

Review: Beneath This Mask & Beneath This Ink by Meghan March

Beneath This Mask
Series: Beneath, #1
Author: Meghan March
Narrators: Andi Arndt, Holter Graham
Publication Date: June 30, 2015
Publisher: Meghan March
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Synopsis:

He loves me, and he doesn t even know my real name.

The limelight that follows him could expose everything I m hiding. But even knowing the risks, I can’t force myself to stay away.

I m going to break his heart, but mine will shatter right along with it.

Will we lose it all when I reveal what s beneath this mask?”

Okay, friends. I’ve found another new favorite author! This is only the second of Meghan March’s books that I have read, but I already know I’m a major fan girl of her writing. It’s so, so good! The way she puts words together — I can’t even explain how much I love it. I want to binge read (or listen) to all of her books.

I was riveted by Beneath This Mask. I couldn’t stop listening to it. It’s about a young woman who is running from her past. She ends up in New Orléans and discovers who she really is. Charlie’s all tatted up and looks nothing like the proper young woman she used to be. Charlie’s working at a tattoo shop when Simon walks in. He’s everything she shouldn’t want. He’s about as straight-laced as it comes, but Charlie can’t stay away from him. The more time they spend together, the more Charlie realizes she needs to tell Simon her deepest darkest secrets. She can only hope they won’t ruin the future she hopes she has with him.

I don’t know if it’s the narrators or what (They’re amazing.), but this story was so vivid. I could easily imagine Charlie, Simon, and their New Orléans. I loved how different Simon and Charlie were from each other at first glance. Charlie’s tough girl image was really cool. I see a lot of bad boys in romance, but bad girls are even more fun! Simon was a good guy and actually very sweet. I was surprised that he had a little bad boy tucked inside himself, too. I adored how he showed that side of him to Charlie alone. They were just so perfect together. I loved them.

Beneath This Mask also had great side characters. Most of them were Charlie’s friends from the tattoo shop or the clothing store. I especially loved Con. After learning more about his friendship with Charlie, I really wanted to know more about him. I was so excited when I realized the second book in this series is his story! I can’t wait to listen to it!

So yeah, the characters in this book were outstanding. So was the plot. I don’t want to give too much away since the blurb is pretty secretive, but I loved it. The reason why Charlie’s hiding and what it could do to her, Simon, and their relationship was different and interesting. I loved the climax of the story and how it wrapped up. It was so good!

Obviously, this book made me really happy. I loved listening to it so much! If you like addictive writing with strong characters, slightly angsty emotions, and incredibly good plots you need to read Beneath This Mask or any other book by Meghan Mark.

Beneath This Ink
Series: Beneath, #2
Author: Meghan March
Narrators: Andi Arndt, Sebastian York
Publication Date: June 30, 2015
Publisher: Meghan March
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Synopsis:

I’ve always known she was too good for me, but that never stopped me from wanting her. And then I finally had her for one night. A night I don’t remember. I figured I’d blown my shot. But now she’s walked back into my life, and this time, I have the upper hand. I want my second chance. Will she be able to see the man beneath this ink?

Beneath This Ink was Charlie’s friend Con’s story. So many things about this book surprised me! It wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I loved that!

First, Con’s love interest is Vanessa. Yes, Vanessa as in Simon’s fake love interest! I kind of guessed there might be something going on with Con and Vanessa based on one of Simon’s comments in the first book, but I didn’t know for sure it was true. I loved Con and Vanessa together. She was the sweet to his sour. They really complimented each other and had amazing chemistry.

Second, this book takes places concurrently with Beneath This Mask. I thought it would be after, but it wasn’t. I actually liked how situations in the two books overlapped. It gave me more insight into the Charlie-Simon relationship and some of Vanessa’s actions in the first book. It also made Con’s actions more understandable.

Third, I had no idea this story would go the places it did! There was a twist or turn around every corner! I thought Vanessa and Con’s love story was going to be pretty straightforward, but it wasn’t. I loved that! I was shocked and awed at the end.

So there were tons of great surprises. There was also AMAZING writing. I love how Meghan March tells a story! And Andi Arndt and Sebastian York did a fabulous job portraying her characters. They’re two of my favorite narrators ever. I could listen to them all day! Beneath This Mask was soooo good! I am very excited to continue listening to this series. Now, if all my library holds would hurry up and come through!

Cover Reveal: Nine by Elizabeth Reyes

Today, I have the cover of NINE by Elizabeth Reyes for you! It is the next book in the Boyle Heights series. ENJOY!

Nine
Series: Boyle Heights, #3

Then along comes Nine.

More like a ten, is her first thought when introduced to the tatted-up, foul-mouthed, unapologetic player. The guy might’ve been her kryptonite five years ago.

But she has a child to think about now.

With every new encounter she has with Nine, she begins to realize there’s so much more to him than just good looks and his bad boy image. She sees a vulnerability in him she never expected. Worse yet, he’s sending out vibes that whisper of promises he’s never made to any girl before.

Is she willing to trade in Mr. Perfect for someone who’s one impetuous decision away from proving that her first impression may have been heartbreakingly spot on?

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Note: This review is for an ARC and is my unbiased opinion.

When I read the blurb for Long Shot I was like, “Okay. A love triangle. I can do this. It’s Kennedy Ryan, so it will be good.” I’m not normally a fan of love triangles, but I had such faith in Kennedy Ryan’s writing that I didn’t stress it. Maybe I should have. I should have known that Kennedy Ryan wouldn’t have written a simple love triangle. It was always going to be more than just that trope.

I knew Long Shot was going to be emotional, but I had no idea how brutal those emotions would be. Was it ever brutal. I don’t even know what to say about this book. It was more than just heartbreaking. Long Shot was devastating in a way I didn’t see coming. It was so uncomfortable to read, but hard to put down. Kennedy Ryan wrote about (what I’ll lamely call) a horrible situation, took thoughts and perception about it, and managed to show almost all sides of it. I was so impressed with how she tackled everything in this story. At the end, when I thought I might feel wrecked by it all, I felt hope and love. I’m so amazed by that.

I’m also amazed by Kennedy Ryan’s ability to write the ways she does. She teaches without preaching, in a way that touches the soul. She did this in Long Shot, and it was truly an exceptional book.

Excerpt:

“Iris?” August’s frown, the concern on his face, in his voice, remind me where I am. “Baby, you okay?”

I blink down at him dumbly, swallowing my tears, eating my memories whole and digesting a nightmare from long ago. I nod, my lips a cold, wobbly curve.

“Kiss me,” he whispers, his eyes so tender, so intent.

I remember a magical night under the stars, under a streetlight on the eve of greatness. A night filled with laughter and confidences, pregnant with promise. And I see him so clearly, my prince, asking for a kiss.

And I do.

I kiss him like the world might end tonight because I’ll never take this for granted. Not his kindness, when I’ve known cruelty all too well. Not his tenderness, when I’ve been handled roughly in the past. Not his love, when I’ve been possessed and owned and mistreated.

He thaws me with his kiss, my prince, and I melt into him. We’re chest to chest, with August’s number crushed between us. I take his cock in my hand, aligning our bodies, and two become one in a carnal slide of flesh. I anchor myself by my elbows hooked around his neck, and we kiss until I’m dizzy and our breaths tangle in a cloud of bliss. Under the jersey, his palm spans my back, digging into the naked flesh as our hips lock and roll and grind. My body clenches around him, and we pray, we curse, we moan, we mate like our bodies were made for this moment.

Ours is a love that reimagines—that peels back the sky at high noon searching for the stars, collecting them like shells in a bucket. We bathe in stardust, drink from the Milky Way, and dance on the moon. We pierce the firmament, peer into infinity, and tread on time and space. There is no before. There is no after. Now gives birth to forever. This moment may die, but this love never will. Time is not a line. It’s a circle, and we, August and Iris, we stand at the center.

“A STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND READ THIS NOW kind of book. Don’t hold your breath, this story will steal it from you.”

The World’s Worst Boyfriend was a second chance romance between childhood sweethearts. Fin and Callie broke up when their lives took different directions after high school. Both were left shattered. Fin escaped through spending time with winter sports and his snowboard. Callie ran off to New York to become an artist and reinvented herself. When they both arrive back home years later for Callie’s brother’s wedding, seeing each other sends their worlds into a tailspin.

What I loved most about The World’s Worst Boyfriend was plot. I’m a sucker for second chance romances, and this one was a lot of fun. I loved how the whole meme that got Fin into trouble ended up pulling Callie and Fin closer together. I loved reading the letters people replied to the meme with. They were sad, but funny in a way. I just thought the whole set up of this story was cool.

Fin was my favorite character in this story. Yes, he made some pretty big mistakes, but he never seemed to do it out malice. He was a nice guy who had a lot to learn. I loved the way he didn’t give up on Callie. Callie wasn’t my favorite at first. She was just a little too shut down for me. That made her character seem snobby. The longer she spent at home, the more I liked her, though. I ended up loving Callie and Fin together.

Another thing I loved — the ending! It was a shocking cliffhanger!!! I really can’t wait to read the next book. I need it now!

I do have to admit their were a couple of things kept me from giving this book five stars. First, the pace was slower than I would have liked. I felt like I was struggling through it at a couple of points, which was weird because Erika Kelly is an amazing writer and I liked the story. Second, it was written in third person. Erika Kelly can pull off third person narration like no other, but in this situation it made it harder to connect with the characters.

Overall, The World’s Worst Boyfriend was a cute romance with a fun story line and a cast of characters I’m excited to read more about.

About Erika Kelly:

Award-winning author Erika Kelly has been spinning romantic tales all her life–she just didn’t know it. Raised on the classics, she didn’t discover romantic fiction until later in life. From that moment on, she’s been devouring the genre and has found her true voice as an author. Over three decades she’s written poems, screenplays, plays, short stories, and all kinds of women’s fiction novels. Married to the love of her life and raising four children, she’s lived in two countries and seven states, but give her pen and paper, a stack of good books, and a steaming mug of vanilla chai latte and she can make her home anywhere.
