Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly Want To Read A Book

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly feature created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly Want To Read A Book.
There are so many different things that make want to read books. Here are ten of them. (All author links are to their websites, and book links are to Goodreads.)

1. It’s by one of my favorite authors.

One favorite author? No, I have so many I’ve lost count these days. But if one of them releases a book, you can be guaranteed I’ll be reading it. A few examples: Sarina Bowen, Elle Kennedy, Ginger Scott…The list goes on and on.

2. It’s a friends to lovers romance.

There’s nothing sweeter than two people who already love each other falling in love. It doesn’t matter how many times this trope is written, I’ll want to read it. A couple of my favorites: Him, Blurred Lines and Sincerely, Carter.

3. It’s an enemies to lovers romance.

So opposite of #2, but just as sweet. When two mortal enemies find they have more in common than they don’t, it makes for a fun romance. All that frustrating attraction is hot. Examples: My Perfect Mistake, Tempt the Boss, and Paper Princess.

4. It’s a sports romance.

I can’t help myself when it comes to sports romances. Those sexy athletes make for incredibly great love interests. All that cocky, muscly goodness is so enjoyable. 😉 I love seeing a strong man lose it over a girl. Some favorites: The Deal, Sacked, and The Hurricane.

5. It’s a part of a series I’ve read.

I’m a sucker for a great series. I especially love romance series where each book is about a different friend or family member. My most recent loves are The Brooklyn Bruisers and WAGS series.

6. Bloggers I follow loved it.

Once you’ve been around the book blogging world for a while, it’s easy to connect with bloggers who enjoy the same reads you do. There are several bloggers who like similar books as I do. When they give a book I’m interested in glowing reviews, I’m all about adding it to the TBR.

7. A respected author recommends it.

Following your favorite authors on social media is fun, but it’s even better when they recommend books. I’ve found several amazing reads by reading a book an author I love suggests. Case in point: Colleen Hoover recommended Kaleidoscope Hearts years ago on Facebook. I read it and fell in love.

9. A half-naked man showing amazing abs on the cover.

I don’t think I have to explain this one. Here’s some eye candy to back it up. You’re welcome. 😉

10. It’s controversial in a way that makes you think.

I like to have my thoughts and emotions challenged when I read. It could be anything from challenging my beliefs to messing with my mind. There’s something about being slightly uncomfortable when I’m reading. Some books that have accomplished one or the other for me: Forbidden, Me Before You, and Marrow.

  1. haha you can’t go wrong with having sexy abs to gawk at. I’m also a sucker for a good friends to lovers romance. There’s something so sweet and innocent about those romances.

  2. Haha I love reason number 9!

Also, books that make you think are my favorites, although it can be nice to lose yourself in a mind-numbing YA romance sometimes! Great list!

  3. OMG, you listed some of my absolute favorites here! I mean, everything by Bowen and Kennedy is spectacular, and Ginger Scott’s “The Girl I Was Before” totally blew me away with how it managed to change the heroine’s character and make her so likable. But I’m digressing. Amazing list! I’ll check the few I haven’t read because it sounds like we have very similar tastes.

  4. A half naked man on the cover goes on my “don’t want to read” list haha (though I still read a lot of them). Do you think Blurred Lines would be one I would like or does it an abundance of graphic scenes? I was trying to find a book the other day at the library and that one didn’t have a wait on it, but I wasn’t sure if it would be a “Stephanie” book.

    • Hmm…It’s a best friends to lovers book, and I think it’s a sex heavier book than most of Layne’s. Not sure if it would be one for you. Have you read Denise Grover Swank’s Bachelor Brotherhood series? It’s a little sexy, but I think you might like that series. I know the second book is on NetGalley. I read the first book a while ago and liked it. I’m reading the second now. I wonder if your library has it?

  5. Oh yeah, I can agree with most of these!! I forgot number 1!! OF COURSE! And number 5, I TOTALLY AGREE! I love books that are a series of interconnected standalones where secondary characters get their stories. 🙂

  6. So many great responses! I can totally see these questions in a book tag of some sort. Me Before You wrecked me and totally made me think, so I agree with you on that one, for sure. <3

  7. So many great ideas on your list! I love the enemies to lovers trope although I don’t read a ton of romance, so it’s usually more of a background/sideplot kind of thing for me. I also tend to pick up books (or at least put them on my TBR) if bloggers I follow have read and enjoyed them which is kind of similar to the “popularity” thing I mentioned in my list.

  8. A half-naked man showing amazing abs on the cover. <- That made me laugh. 😀
While it might not make me pick up the book I do drool for a minute (or two, three, five).
